Phoenix Button. A Columbia River trade item this is a No. 8 small disc type button Style #1. The Phoenix Buttons were originally manufactured in Great Britain prior to 1820 and used by the military of King Christophe of Haiti. The buttons were brought to the Columbia River as trade goods prior to 1835 by Boston merchant Nathaniel Wyeth. This button was found on the Columbia by Dewey Schmid prior to 1955. Dewey was a member of the old Oregon Archaeological Society.
