Historic Elbow Pipe, 3 13/16". Decorated Steatite pipe bowl with patinated wooden stem.

Historic Elbow Pipe 3 13/16" . Decorated Steatite pipe bowl with patinated wooden stem from Yakima WA. From the Ernest Cowles collection. Cowles' inventory number 'K-42' is marked on the bottom of the bowl. Ernie was a member of the O.A.S. and was profiled in Who's Who in Indian Relics Vol. 3 1972. Described in Ernie Cowles collection notes the entry for 'K-42' reads: Small L-shaped Pipe with wooden stem that belonged to Chief Saluskin of the Yakimas. Bill Gannon bought the Chief's beadwork and other belongings and gave me the pipe. Bill Gannon was an early Native American Art dealer in the eastern Washington territory. An interesting feature of the pipe is the linen thread wrapped around the stem where it inserts into the bowl to help tighten the fit. A copy of the Cowles Collection notes with the K-42 information is included.
